Why are we ashamed? (And shame vs. guilt)

A while back, I wrote about a post entitled “I’m embarrassed about my past (dealing with shame and guilt)”. And if you haven’t read that one, or don’t remember it, I suggest you check it out because it’s a good one. (You can find it here.) But I wanted to pick up from there today, because after that, you may still be wondering, “Okay, but why is it I feel so ashamed?” And that is a really good point.

Is personality fixed? (Or even real?)

I’ve had lots of conversations about personality over the years, especially ones where personality itself wasn’t being discussed specifically, but rather used as a jumping off point to understand a person or situation or what have you. And it wasn’t until recently that I had sort of an epiphany, from yet another conversation, this one being incredibly short. In fact, I’d almost rather class it as an off-handed comment than a conversation, yet it struck me anyway.

After therapy ends: Pt. 1 Therapy should end

It’s no secret, I’ve talked about therapy a lot on this site. I’ve given you a story of when I was in therapy, a piece on if you should be in therapy, a post on if you should quit therapy, not to mention a smattering of other pieces as well as mentions of therapy in posts where therapy is not the main topic. That’s because it’s been a big part of my getting better, and for those of you who have access and can afford it, I think it could be an important tool for you. (That’s what this is about, after all, expanding our tool belts.) But today, I’m doing something a little different.

Believing your thoughts: my two cents

Hi everyone! A while back, I posted about the inner work necessary in order to improve your emotional health. (If you’re interested about my journey with inner work, you can find that post here.) In that piece, I mentioned that I would be writing about specific mental work in the future. Well, wait no longer because that day is today! And today, we’re talking about the validity of our thoughts.

My vegan journey, part 3: advice for new vegans

How can you do right by this adorable creature?

Welcome to part 3 of my series on veganism. In part one, I addressed what my food attitudes were like before veganism. And part two talked about the initial change of finding out about veganism and my decision to devote myself to it. Now we begin the third installment of my vegan series. I’m going to tell you the things that I feel all new vegans particularly should know. Well, at the very least, the things that I feel like I should have been told when I first went vegan. I’m also going to wrap up my “beginning of veganism” story.

My vegan journey, part 2: starting veganism

This is part two of the story of my vegan journey. If you didn’t read part one, I highly suggest you do, as it sets the scene for what is to come here. You can read part one by clicking here

Now, when we last left off, I was someone who wanted to be vegetarian, but did not succeed. I was disappointed. And I didn’t get over it, so much as I let my disappointment fade into forgetfulness over time. I thought that was the final chapter of my meat-free lifestyle. The beginning of this story starts a couple years after that, where I gain access to the idea of veganism for the first time as a young teenager.

My vegan journey, Part 1: before veganism

I don’t talk about my veganism much. There are a lot of reasons for this, including personal morals, misperceptions of others and as bad as it may sound, emotional exhaustion. But because of suggestions from other people, I’ve decided to talk about it anyway. Knowing that people want to hear about this has brought me to the decision to talk about it openly and honestly, so I hope you all enjoy.
